Someone asked me on Vimeo how I get focus, so I created this quick video on my method.

Canon T2i has been discontinued, replacement is the Canon T6i: B&H | Amazon

When you have no one to help you shoot video, you have to get creative. I show one way that does not work well and one that does.

Hat tip to Caleb Pike for this one.

  • Hello Dave!
This is a great video tip. When I get my 550D, maybe I won’t film myself very often, but maybe I’ll use my laptop to better focus on subjects, because I read very often that in bright sunlight you can’t see things on the camera LCD very well. So maybe the bigger laptop display is a nice and quick solution for this problem, what do you think?

    Cheers

  • Actually laptop screens look just as terrible in bright light. The only good solution is something like the Zfinder, LCDVF, or Hoodman.

Or you can get a portable monitor and use a shade of some kind. Ikan and others make one. Or you can just use a cardboard box and some tape.

  • How come you’re able to adjust ISO in video mode? I can’t adjust anything besides focus and WB

  • When i do this… I just get one white box in the center. I don’t get the little boxes that you eventually clicked to focus on your eye… ??? Have I done something wrong?

  • Hi Dave,

I have the same Canon Rebel as you do and I’m only recently trying to explore the video option to shoot videos for YouTube.

I came across your site via YouTube looking for Canon lens and I this this tutorial in particular has helped me a lot. Thank you so so much.

I have a question to ask you, I’m thinking of upgrading my kit lens for the 17-55mm f2.8, I would like to shoot close ups of the eyes ( think makeup tutorials) , I don’t think you have covered any zoom in shots in any of your video tutorials, I’m wondering how I could achieve something like the following:

I could see there’s full face shots and then close up shots of the eyes, is the zoom acheive by using an editing programme or is it zoomed with the lens when it is being recorded?

    Any advice really appreciated.

Please keep more video’s coming as it is very helpful 🙂

  • hey this video is awesome! i was just wondering how you got your camera mode to manual though. mine doesn’t let me change settings when im in the camera mode like your screen does
