Looks like I should have a lot of fun with this camera over the next 30 days.

Here is my first test with the GoPro HERO3 Black Edition. Looks like I should have a lot of fun with this camera over the next 30 days.

I also share my latest condo video I did this past weekend.

I try 4 things:

  • 1080 24fps narrow angle
  • 1080 24fps medium angle
  • 1080 24fps wide angle
  • 1080 24fps wide angle with ProTune which appears to be a very flatten image with no sharpening added at all.

  • Very nice. I’ve got the Hero 2 and I like to use it to capture timelapse video. I’d like to see the Hero3 at the 4K 15fps setting used to capture timelapse (in conjunction with a moco slider). You’d get a slide move as well as “pan-and-scan” functionality at the 4K res scaled down to HD. What do you think?

    BTW, love your stuff!

  • Hey Dave!

What camera and lenses did you use to film that condo video? It’s so crisp and at night the quality is pretty unbelievable.

    Thanks.

  • Love the condo video Dave! You got a ton of shots. Just curious: for external shots, where you lugging a tripod around or did you use a monopod?

  • Very nice video dave!the steadicam is very smooth!I have the hero 2 and it is awesome for timelapses and underwater-action scenes but defenetly is not like my second camera, the t3i!Good job!every time i like your work! cheers!

  • I have had the Go Pro Hero 3 Black for a few months now and have really liked the quality and the versatility. I was under the assumption that the protune setting gave you better color separation natively. After watching your video, it seems like protune mode is akin to shooting video in RAW where you do the color correction in post. Is this an accurate analogy? Look forward to hearing more input on the GPH3 Black.

  • Used the Hero3 now for a while (after having sold my Hero2).

I ran into the following problems :

    – the little closing cap which protects the plugs for USB etc. is not attached to the camera body. So easy to loose (as I did 😉 )

    – the camera was freezing a few times after the battery charging process. I had to take the battery out to be able to restart. Had the same problem with the Hero2 but it was obviously related to the WIFI function.

    – the button on the waterproof box to switch the camera on/off seems to have a weaker spring. So if the camera is (unprotected) transported in a box with lots of contact to other gear, it can accidentally being switched on. You risk an empty battery the moment you need the camera (as it happened to me 😉 ).

I put rain-x onto the lens so water drops could run away easier and it worked like a charm when taking the camera out of water (did not test it under rain).

I recommend the use of little pieces of paper towel if you use the waterproof box. It is a cheap and very efficient solution to get humidity inside the box “under control”.

Hey, and thank you for sharing all your experiences ! Appreciate it !!

  • Amazing as always Doug you have really captured the environment is such an enlightening manner, after watching the video i really wanted to go and see this place and buy one of those condos for myself. One thing you may want to adjust is the slight camera shake at 4:39

keep up the great work man

  • Another great video Dave. If you don’t mind some constructive criticism the shot where you whip around the corner at 4.39 looks amateurish, compared to the rest of the shots which all look great. You could probably shave 30 seconds off it as well. Certainly made me want to go back to Colorado though. Thanks.

  • Everything looked great and made me want to go there. I do not have a trained eye (newbie) and did not see what Kelly was talking about but I will go back and see just for my own knowledge.

Thank you again for all that you put in to these videos.

  • Great Dave! I would agree with Kelly though on the shot at 4:39. I was holding my breath there..

5:05-5:25 My favorite. Snow with searchlights very cool! +LED color washes for the sculptures. (It’s the light guy in me:))

I so want to get a GoPro. They are awesome. Please do a full review with underwater tests in streams or water falls.
