Sony a7Rii Getting Started in Video
a7rii

Are you interested in shooting video with your Sony a7Rii, but not sure where to start? This course will get you up to speed quickly. Get instant access and start watching now.

This is a beginner level course and advanced too, about 5 hours is at a beginner level, however the chapter on Slog2 is a very advanced chapter. If you are a beginner I would suggest skipping the Slog2 chapter until you have used the camera for about 6 months and then return to watch the Slog2 chapter. This course covers the camera in great detail (everything video related in the manual and more), but it does not cover items sold separately from the camera, editing, rendering and photography features.

Follow along as I start fresh and reset all the menus as you follow along with me as I setup the a7Rii for video shooting. The menus can be very confusing when it comes to focus modes, codecs, compression, frame rates, I step you through each one and demo how they work.

Sony's manuals are biased towards photography and leave a lot to be desired when it comes to shooting video. This training course fills in those gaps and a lot more. The true value of this course is saving you weeks if not months of time testing your camera to get the best results.

Who is the course for? People that have never owned a Sony mirrorless camera before, or people that have had their camera for a while but never shot video. Or, this course is great for people who have not tested all the different settings.

This course is based in the latest a7Rii 2.00 firmware update which is almost identical to the most recent.

Course running time: 6 hours 15 minutes

Unsolicited Testimonials

"Dave thank you so much for the a7rii course! The information here is invaluable.  I jumped right to video D. The creative styles are the hardest to find information on since everyone is still going crazy for slog." - Steven

"I purchased your course the day my A7Rii arrived! I'm so glad for your course, I don't know what I would do without it, being a complete novice! (Aren't I lucky to start with the A7Rii :-) I've been saving for it for a long time and wanted to start with the best! " - Inga

"I’ve been following Dave for a good while now (yes even when he was a Canon man 😉 and really enjoy his presentation style. This was my first purchase, but won’t be the last. I was a little worried about it being mostly for beginners (I’ve been shooting 80% photo and 20% video since the A7 was released, then the A7II, now the 7RII) but I was wrong to worry. I’ve only touched on the videos and watched the samples, but its absolutely going to be worth it if for nothing else than the slog2 section. (I’ve been muddling through learning slog and LUTS lately) I also like having the choice of downloading or streaming the video." - William

"Dave is honest and does not approach is training in a I am holier than thou status, he doesn't fake it on camera. This course is fantastic - outstanding. Especially the chapter on Slog, he goes into many practical examples so users don't get confused by a lot of technical jargon but they can see it. If you have not used this camera before this course is an incredible help." - Paul

"I finished your course on the A7Rii and loved it - so much useful information presented in such an open and comfortable way. I'm an experienced photographer so I appreciated learning more about S-log and your intro to color grading." - Bill

"I just wanted to stop by and say thanks for the a7rii course! I loved it and got a lot out of it. It was much easier to spend $50 than to scour the internet for hours on end to find fragments of information that are typically spun with opinion and not-so-useful tests. You had it all in one place and gave care to the structure and presentation, so that anyone can follow along." - Stephen

Just wanted to say I am enjoying and getting a lot out of the A7Rii course [even though I don't own one yet - my approach will be to hit the ground running]. - Mark

"My wife brought me the A7rm2 course last week as a surprise gift.. My reaction is that Dave's courses are best described that he gives away the tips and tricks the masters use and that they do not want you to know and use." - Michanel

" Really enjoyed your course on A7Rii - thanks for great content." - David

"I've been checking out Dave Dugdale a7rii training videos and I have to say they are loaded with great info. If you want to get up and running shooting video this is a great course. Nice work Dave!" - Erik

Again, thank you for making your videos so easy to understand. they really help people like me who are beginners and feel so overwhelmed by all the numbers and terms associated with the camera and production. - Beto

Covered/Not Covered

What is covered:

Only video related items.

Some color correction within Premiere Pro and Davinci Resolve is used for the Slog2 chapter.

How to set up your camera for video.

Basically everything in the manual that relates to video plus more info that the manual neglects to mention.

What is not covered:

Photography information such as exposure compensation, the flash unit, RAW image files, etc..

This course does not cover how to edit, render/export your files, this is mostly a prerequisite course for more advanced courses to come. This is for people that have never owned a mirrorless camera before or are interested in shooting video.

I will not cover items sold separately from the camera. For example, while I will cover all the ways you can focus in movie mode, I am not going to cover items sold separately like a follow focus and how to use them for video.

I don't cover specs in the back of the manual.
